Black Cat Quilts, opened by Gretchen Nelson in 1996 and dedicated exclusively to quiltmaking, is San Francisco's premier store for all quilters, whether beginner, novice, or expert.

Gracing the store's ever-changing shelves are more than 2,000 bolts of bright, colorful fabric in a  broad selection of contemporaries and traditionals, as well as wonderful batiks and Asian prints, beautifully hand-painted and hand-dyed fabrics, and novelty and juvenile prints from P&B, Alexander Henry, Michael Miller, Hoffman, Kona Bay, Robert Kaufman, Moda, and others.

Also, you'll find batting from Hobbs, Fairfield, and Quilter's Dream in 100% cotton, 80% cotton/20% polyester, and polyester in a variety of sizes. We also carry Hobbs wool and silk batting in a variety of sizes.

Our bookshelves boast a collection of titles covering all areas of quiltmaking from major publishers such as C&T, Martingale, and others.  Also here is a nice variety of patterns from C&T, Maple Island, Atkinson Designs, June Colburn, Kathleen Bissett, and others.

Sit and peruse!

Each year, Black Cat Quilts offers more than 200 classes taught by highly experienced, expert teachers.  Our schedule includes something for everyone-absolute beginners, kids, fairly new quilters, and experienced quilters.  Click on Classes at the top of the page to see our current schedule.

  Miss Kitty!

Our beloved store cat, Miss Kitty, died March 3, 2006.  She lived 16 happy years--9 of them at Black Cat Quilts.  The perfect shop cat, Miss Kitty was sweet and gentle and loved to sit on quilts.  She was very loved and will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

At the end of November, we adopted a new black cat for the store. Pepper is 2-1/2 years old and black except for a small white triangle on her lower belly. We think she's part Manx because she has a very short tail. Pepper is very friendly and loves to be petted and brushed. She's quite playful and will chase her flexible stick until she wears us out.

Our friendly, professional staff is always available for support in making your quiltmaking selections, from design questions to finishing details.

Just ask!

This is Mom, Jeannine Nelson. We look forward to her annual visit from Wisconsin. She stays for six weeks and works every day at the store.

A devoted 25-year quilter, Jeannine has a special
gift for helping customers with color coordination
and fabric selection.

Gretchen Nelson is a fourth generation retailer. Finding her corporate experience unengaging, she turned her MBA to making a plan for a business using her long interest in fiber arts, especially quiltmaking.

Here she's winding the store clock that previously hung in the stairwell of Nelson Mercantile Company in Argyle, Wisconsin, the general store operated successively by her great-grandfather, grandfather, and father.
